New Advanced Lighting Course Focuses on Practical Knowledge

ALA members who have earned their Lighting Specialist (LS) accreditation, but don’t feel ready to jump into the Certified Lighting Consultant (CLC) program, now have a new training opportunity specifically designed to teach practical, advanced lighting knowledge.

Answering the demand for an advanced lighting course that is more in-depth than the popular LS accreditation, but not as intense as the CLC curriculum, ALA created the “Beyond the Lighting Specialist” course as the solution for experienced lighting professionals who want to expand their lighting knowledge in an abbreviated time period that accommodates hectic schedules.

“Beyond the Lighting Specialist” is a two-day virtual course, to be held Nov. 12 and 13, via Zoom, which will feature live instruction by Peter Romaniello, IALD, of the architectural lighting design firm Conceptual Lighting, LLC. Participants can attend live and participate in the lesson in real time, or watch the video of the session later at a time that is convenient.

Open to all ALA members, the “Beyond the Lighting Specialist” accelerated course will cover such topics as: how to create more advanced plan specifications for clients; how to write a specification that everyone on the project can read and understand; what to include on your design plan; how to successfully and fairly charge for your services; ways to incorporate controls into your sale and plan; and how to balance recessed with decorative lighting and ceiling fans, among other topics.

The course includes 8 hours of virtual learning that will count for 8 hours toward CLC/CLMR credit.
The class dates and times via Zoom are:
Tuesday, Nov. 12, 9:00–11:00 a.m. & 1:30–3:30 p.m. CT
Wednesday, Nov. 13, 9:00–11:00 a.m. & 1:30–3:30 p.m. CT

Residential lighting designer Fiona Grunwald, LS, principal of Design by Conway LLC in Virginia, was one of the first members to sign up.

“I was so happy to see this ‘Beyond the Lighting Specialist’ program, and have already signed up for the CLC course,” Grunwald said. “I’m a true advocate for education and want to take every opportunity to hone my craft. I love that the CLC requires both education and practical application.
Given the enormous changes and advances in the lighting industry, there is more demand for architectural lighting design knowledge. I want to have the expertise and the ability to provide that service, and obtaining CLC accreditation provides a clear differentiation for potential clients.”

She added, “The ‘Beyond the LS’ course looks like a fantastic bridge between the LS and the CLC. I’m a huge fan of Peter Romaniello, his extensive technical knowledge and wonderful teaching style is definitely a draw.  The combination of the technical and business elements will be very beneficial.”

Registration will be on a first-come, first-served basis as attendance will be limited in order to provide greater instructor-student interaction. The course fee is $399.  Click here to register.
