ALA Offers Free Training for Members

Unprecedented Action Leads to Record Participation

To help strengthen ALA members during the global pandemic, ALA offered all online education courses from mid-March through mid-May at no cost to members. The unprecedented offer included live webinars, as well as the 10-course Lighting Associate (LA) curriculum, ordinarily $350, that resulted in a record 1,285 member participants.

Member survey to influence ALA programs

In response to the global effect of COVID-19 on businesses, an ALA survey is gathering data to determine the most effective products and programs to develop for the benefit of members. It is the goal of ALA to help members reinvent where necessary and refocus business models as everyone prepares to return to everyday operations.

Annual Conference

The ALA Board of Governors and staff continue to monitor events and recommendations related to the Sept. 13-15 Annual Conference at The Breakers Palm Beach. A final scheduling decision is expected in June as both the hotel property and ALA will follow the recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

The health and well-being of all attendees is always our most important concern as we navigate unprecedented times and carefully weigh the most current reports and situations. More information to come soon.

 

 

Above and Beyond

Members’ leadership efforts provide supplies and inspiration

As soon as businesses were forced to temporarily close or severely limit customer access, a number of ALA members immediately showed leadership and took steps to help by donating needed supplies, personal protection equipment and inspiration.

WAC Lighting donated 500,000 level-3 surgical masks to COVID-19 healthcare relief efforts in the U.S. hospitals, primarily in the New York metropolitan area. Continue Nick Senofsky, owner and CEO of LED Inspirations, inspires industry owners and workers by produced a motivational video, "Leadership During Anxious Times." Jon Sayah, president of Lights Fantastic Pro and CEO of Saylite, participates in the April 3 edition of the “Get a Grip on Lighting” podcast produced by the National Association of Innovative Lighting Distributors.


 

Government Assistance Programs for ALA Members

ALA strives to inform members about the government assistance programs now available to help small- and medium-size businesses, in both the U.S. and Canada, cope with pandemic-related issues.

Can Germicidal Lighting Combat COVID-19?

UV technology can be effective against viruses with proper safety precautions

The use of germicidal lighting as a potential way to combat germs and viruses, including COVID-19, is receiving a lot of interest and publicity lately. Germicidal ultraviolet "light" or GUV refers to the technology of germicidal lighting, which utilizes ultraviolet-emitting sources. While GUV is a technology with great opportunity, it is more complicated than simply turning on a UV light.

Terry McGowan, FIES, LC, director of engineering and technology for ALA, explains that it is imperative to be cognizant of the safety and efficacy issues of using germicidal lighting, and to be educated about the capabilities of the different types of UV light.
