Paddleboard & Kayaking Excursion at Peanut Island

What is Peanut Island? 

You’d think a place named “Peanut Island” would be referring to its 79-acre size, but the moniker has a more literal origin. Initially called “Inlet Island” when it was created in 1918 at the Lake Worth Inlet in Palm Beach County, this man-made island was renamed “Peanut Island” because of a proposed peanut oil-shipping operation that ultimately was never developed.   

Accessible only by boat (i.e. water taxi), Peanut Island has undergone several million-dollar renovations over the decades and includes camp sites, a pier, a man-made reef, a 1.25-mile walking path, gardens, and picnic areas.

Peanut Island is renowned as a snorkeling spot; the water is very clear, making it easy to spot parrot and angel fish, crabs, and coral. 

ALA members who’d rather keep their heads out of the water can enjoy paddleboarding and kayaking instead, or take in the natural beauty and wildlife on the island on a nature walk.

FUN FACT: Peanut Island is also home to the Detachment Hotel (known as “the Kennedy Bunker”), a 1,500-sq.-ft. structure with a bunker that was built in 1961 specifically for President John F. Kennedy during the Cuban Missile Crisis. The location was chosen because of its proximity to the Kennedy family home in Palm Beach. The Kennedy Bunker was eventually declassified and later open to the public, but due to funding issues, it is currently closed. Palm Beach County reportedly recently took over the land lease and plans to restore the landmark and offer public tours once more after restoration is completed in the years ahead. 

How the Peanut Island excursion will work:

Members will depart the hotel at 9:15 a.m. for a 30-minute drive by bus. Once there, all needed rental equipment will be provided. You will have plenty of time to explore the island whether you want to snorkel and see the local wildlife or just soak up the sun.  Buses will depart back to the resort around 1 p.m. and arrive by 1:30 p.m.
