AIA Home Design Trends Survey Shows Growth in Lighting Controls

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) recently released the results of its Home Design Trends Survey, which covers activity during the second quarter of 2017, focusing on emerging home features, systems and technologies. Among the trends reported, from 2016 to 2017, lighting controls and home automation showed the highest percent increase in popularity.

Total home automation controls and energy management systems also increased in population from 2016. Additionally, respondents to the survey reported that energy efficiency is also increasing in importance when it comes to their home design features.

ALA and its membership have been focused on and aware of these growing trends for some time. In ALA’s recent consumer study, energy efficiency was noted as one of the more important features when it comes to lighting. However, not at the expense of design and quality of the product or light source.

Throughout 2018, ALA will continue to focus programming and efforts on the growing importance and opportunities related to the connected home revolution.
