Upton Announces Close to Professional Career

After meeting with ALA President and CEO Eric Jacobson, Dick Upton announced he would be closing his professional career at the end of 2017.

Following his retirement as President and CEO of ALA at the end of 2014, Upton remained on staff serving as director of the ALA Political Action Committee for two years, and as treasurer of the ALA Education Foundation for one year.

Upton’s years of industry experience and strong relationships with the association’s membership allowed him to lead successful fundraising campaigns for both the PAC and foundation.

"I am pleased we have seen strong and positive growth in both the foundation and the PAC," said Upton. "I thank the committee, board and staff for their helpful support that has allowed us to have success with these responsibilities."

"For the last several years, Dick has done a great job growing the ALA-PAC and giving us the capacity to expand our political champions and influence in D.C.," said Jacobson. "I appreciate his contributions to ALA and wish him well in the next chapter of his life."

During Upton’s more than 20 years of service to ALA, the association grew exponentially, income growth was increased substantially and member involvement showed dramatic improvement. His dedication to ALA and its members has been extremely impactful on the association, as well as the lighting, ceiling fan and control industries.

Upton added, "I will always be available to support the association with any counsel that may be of value. I greatly appreciate having had the opportunity to ‘retire in stages’ following my retirement as president and CEO. These past three years have allowed me to transition into retirement in a positive, healthy manner."

Eric Jacobson stated Michael Weems will lead ALA’s PAC efforts going forward and he is confident Weems will do an outstanding job in growing and expanding the ALA-PAC. Upton can be reached by email at dickandmoiraupton@gmail.com or by phone at 214-358-1400.
