LIGHTING SPECIALIST


To earn the Lighting Specialist (LS) designation, ALA members must purchase and review the Residential Lighting Training Manual and pass a final exam. Members may choose to complete self-study at their own pace or attend a four-day Residential Lighting Training Course, offered at least once a year.

The manual encompasses every aspect of the residential lighting industry, including industry trends, technology, and technical developments.

The LS final exam may be taken online by contacting the ALA. A score of at least 80 percent is needed on the Final Examination of the training manual to become an ALA Lighting Specialist. Exam certification is for ALA members only, non-members will not be recognized for Lighting Specialist.

RECERTIFICATION: To maintain your certification, you must recertify every two years by earning 4 CEU credit hours through ALA-approved training. The CEU credit hours may be earned at any time within the two-year time frame. Recertification fee: $40.

About the Residential Lighting Training Manual

The Residential Lighting Training Manual (RLTM) is the core training material for the lighting industry and the basis for earning the LS designation.

The RLTM is the only training manual that encompasses every aspect of the residential lighting industry. Industry professionals, including sales associates, designers and manufacturer representatives, study the manual to strengthen their knowledge about how lighting should be used in customers' homes.

The manual consists of seven modules:
