Residential lighting controls can present challenges for even the most basic of installations thanks in part to emerging technology and recent changes in codes. Controls are an integral part of lighting and understanding the basic concepts of lighting controls can help you navigate the design process. This two-part talk discusses what you need to know about lighting controls and shows you how to approach designing practical, code-compliant, and feasible residential lighting controls that enhance the beauty, value, and energy efficiency of residential spaces, and is intended for designers, specifiers, sales and showroom personnel, building contractors, homeowners, and anyone else interested in learning about lighting controls.

 

Part 2 expands upon Part 1 as a more in-depth review of lighting control  documentation, and terminology. This part also reviews how to select and design a lighting control system.

 

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course participants will be able to:

  • Use fundamental principles of lighting controls design to deliver residential spaces that meet owners’ requirements, adhere to code requirements, and deliver beautiful light.
  • Identify and specify a lighting control system for residential lighting controls.
  • Create documentation to support a lighting control design, its installing, and operation.
  • Follow best practices in working with Owners, Sales personnel, Contractors, and project teams to execute successful lighting controls designs.

C. Webster Marsh is the owner of Penumbra Controls, where he provides lighting controls design and specification for a wide range of project types.

Webster brings 14 years of applied experience with lighting and controls, and he enjoys using his wealth of knowledge in the architectural lighting design industry. Webster started out in theatrical lighting design, progressed to architectural lighting design, and therein found a passion for controls. Webster has worked on many types of projects big and small from airports to private residences.
