President's Letter - June 2018

ALA continues to strengthen and expand programming for association members. The upcoming release of the new ALA Residential Lighting Training Manual has led to a sold-out four-day training course in Chicago this week at the Juno Lighting facility. The demand is so strong, ALA will look to add an additional Residential Lighting Training Course later this year.

Our continued partnership with the Dallas Market Center (DMC) has grown with the recent announcement of The SMART Center. The center will help ALA and the DMC coordinate and maximize training opportunities offered during Lightovation Markets and bring added value to attending members.

Ribbon cutting, open house set for June 20

ALA is joining with the Dallas Market Center to open The SMART Center, a new education and meeting center in the Dallas Trade Mart, Suite 4826. The 6,000-square-foot facility, which will officially open at June Lightovation with a ribbon cutting on Wednesday, June 20, at 9 a.m., will host ALA and DMC seminars, training programs, certification classes and committee meetings. In addition, The SMART Center will include numerous charging stations for phones and laptops, intimate seating areas, and a hospitality bar. We look forward to members and industry professionals utilizing our new location in the heart of the lighting market. It will be a convenient and comfortable spot for professional and social networking throughout each lighting show. The following ALA members have donated lighting products included in the new center: Acuity Brands Lighting, CoeLux, Fanimation, Kuzco Lighting, Lutron, Modern Forms, Saylite, SONNEMAN - A Way of Light, and Tech Lighting.

ALA and IES release new Residential Lighting Standard

ALA has worked jointly with the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) over the past two years to co-write RP-11, Lighting for Interior and Exterior Residential Environments standard. This is the first time that ALA has embarked on helping write an ANSI-approved standard. Eric Borden, ALA committee co-chair, was instrumental in developing the standard. This Recommended Practice is a guide for designing and teaching lighting. It covers residential living spaces and other areas intended to impart a residential atmosphere. It describes design objectives, criteria for quantity and quality of illuminance, lighting methods, types and uses of equipment, energy use, and electrical code considerations. Various solutions that address residential lighting problems are also presented. RP-11 will soon be available for members to purchase at the member store .

ALA opposes industry-limiting tariffs

ALA is actively engaged and working to oppose any tariffs being proposed by the Trump Administration. Tariffs were the number-one topic discussed during our recent Washington, D.C. Fly-in. Additionally, ALA joined an ad hoc group of national trade associations fighting against tariffs. ALA submitted comments to the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), which specifically address LEDs (components) being included in the China 301 tariffs.
