Residential Lighting Controls: The Case for Design - Part 1

Residential lighting controls can present challenges for even the most basic of installations thanks in part to emerging technology and recent changes in codes. Controls are an integral part of lighting and understanding the basic concepts of lighting controls can help you navigate the design process. This two-part talk discusses what you need to know about lighting controls and shows you how to approach designing practical, code compliant, and feasible residential lighting controls that enhance the beauty, value, and energy efficiency of residential spaces, and is intended for designers, specifiers, sales and showroom personnel, building contractors, homeowners, and anyone else interested in learning about lighting controls.

Part 1 is an introduction to the design principles of lighting controls, common terminology, what is important and why, and guidance on how to discuss lighting controls in meetings.

Learning Objectives
At the end of this course participants will be able to: 
•    Use fundamental principles of lighting controls design to deliver residential spaces that meet owners’ requirements, adhere to code requirements, and deliver beautiful light.
•    Apply a practical knowledge of user behavior in designing, installing, and operating lighting controls.
•    Explain the basic process and stages of design for residential lighting controls.
•    Follow best practices in working with Owners, Sales personnel, and project teams to execute successful lighting controls designs.

Clifton is an active speaker and has extensive experience in curriculum development for professional training in lighting and energy efficiency. He is also the author of Beautiful Light; An Insider’s Guide to LED Lighting in Homes and Gardens (Routledge Taylor & Francis). He is a past President of the San Francisco Section of the Illuminating Engineering Society, and is on the Advisory Board for LightFair International.
